When My Sunday School Teacher Died of Aids
I got saved in 1980. It was a tremendous change in my life. One of the first things was Sunday School. My first Sunday School Teachers were Nancy and Don. They were a great couple. Loved the Lord and took my wife and I under their wing. That was nice and comforting, We were eager to learn what God would show us. She was my partner in my Masters Counseling program, and he was the Baptist Church Organist.
We were close. They help my wife, and I adjust and learn in their Sunday school class at church and even in their home. We went to dinner there on a few occasions. They had a nice home on the beach and boardwalk in Ocean City, NJ. And Don drove a big yellow Cadillac.
They had a beautiful family. They had three attractive daughters, Susan, Abby and Annie and a handsome son, Nathan. All of which were very intelligent and talented. A perfect family. They all were active at some level for the Lord. The son even preached at a high school assembly for an award he had won. Anne was becoming a professional model and manager of my basketball team, and occasional babysitter for us. It was a perfect Bible believing wholesome family.
However, it seemed like in one day it all changed. And it changed drastically. I hadn’t seen Don for a couple of weeks and as I was speaking to Annie at my office, she said Daddy died from that new disease. I asked her, do you mean AIDS. She said yes, I think so.
It turns out that my Sunday schoolteacher was a homosexual and was hiding it for quite some time. He had left the family and had moved to NYC where he died a few weeks later. She was hesitant from that point on because the family did not live in the house on the beach but in a 2nd floor apartment.
Several months after that. Nathan was killed in a car accident. I remember the viewing. It was sad and there was a lot of people there who heard the Gospel. Then, one daughter left the family and moved away.
The family quickly lost everything because he had left them in financial trouble. Nancy and Annie moved to Chicago. Annie did move in with us for a few weeks but decided to go to Chicago also.
There was a lot of Trauma in the family. Lots of unresolved issues. Lots of emotional hurt. Lots of Embarrassment.
Several Years later…
Annie who is Anne Heche, had become a TV star and then a movie star. She had relationships with several men, then became a lesbian. Drug use and bad choices began to take a toll. Lost everything and died in a car accident.
Nancy her mother is a strong Christian a has a radio program in Chicago area and has written books on problems of homosexuality.
Annie was a gifted young girl. She took a strong stance for the Lord at one time. But the lure of the world, the fame, the fortune caught her eye.
And it only took…One miss step can change everything, a focus on fame instead of the Savior.
